Preserving Ellingsen Bandstand for Generations to Come
Project Overview
A major renovation of Hawley's iconic Ellingsen Bandstand, built in 1932, is being undertaken this summer 2023. Some of the work slated includes a rebuild of the interior ceiling, replace rotted soffits, new wiring and expanded electric and lighting, upgraded 100-amp service and electric panels, rebuild balustrades, new stair entrance and bannisters, re-do ground stonework at stair base, application of proper exterior finishes and more.
Project Timeline Highlights
April to November 2022
Hawley Borough works to seek funding for the renovation project, ultimately receiving approval to modify the scope of work and focus the grant funding on the bandstand. Contracts between the grant sponsor and borough are approved and signed.
December 2022- April 2023
The Borough engineer completes the final design, prepares the bid documents, bids the project out, project is advertised for the required 30 days, the engineer confirms the qualifications of the contractor, the borough awards the bid. Contracts for construction are created, approved, signed and executed.
May- June 2023
The building materials are ordered, the borough secures the perimeter and readies the site for construction. The contractor mobilizes the site once materials have been delivered then schedules construction.
June 14, 2023
Construction begins. The interior ceiling is determined to be too damaged to repair so it's completely removed. Balustrades are worked on.
June 19, 2023
Steps are demoed, cement base laid. Existing stones are carefully removed then laid out and marked for re-placing once stairs are completed. Electrical has been started.
June 20, 2023
The large over-grown shrubs around the bandstand are removed, the recessed lighting hangers, junction boxes and wiring is begun. Scraping and carpentry continues.
June 28, 2023
The ceiling begins to go up, the stairs have been rebuilt.
